2017-18 NYRA Winter Series (Race Day #3 – Saturday December 9)

Racing for Saturday December 9 (Winter Series Race Day #3) has been cancelled. The Real Feel for game time is currently at 31 deg, and pursuant to the Series NOR, no racing is held when the real feel is predicted to be 35 deg or less.   NYRA’s Annual meeting and the chili social at the home of Mike and Joy Evans (113 Dorchester Ln, New Bern – just off of Madame Moore’s Ln) is still on!  Please come, and consider volunteering to serve on the Board, or on one of our committees – don’t just complain about what your race club is doing, take some time to help us make it better!  Or nominate someone you feel would be an asset!  We need committed people who love to sail, and are motivated to help us build and improve what we do!  Just drop us an email with suggestions/nominations, or if you have questions about what is required, give me a call – 252 671 7462; reach the full board at
Our hostess for this weekend’s social, Joy Evans, is currently on NYRA’s board, and has served on the board in many capacities (as well as volunteering on committees). She recently summed up her decades long commitment to sailboat racing and NYRA in a way that should inspire everyone who loves sailing on the Neuse to give some of their time to the cause:

To: The NYRA Board of Directors
All NYRA members
The chili party is days away and we’re looking for people to serve on the Board next year.
I started working on the race committee in 1985 and have been invested in NYRA ever since. Over those many years I have held every position on the Board; Mike was Commodore once too. I have gained so much from the experience: friends, the Olympics, the confidence of being a PRO, the good feeling of being involved in something worthwhile.
But now Mike has lost all interest in sailing and I haven’t been an active PRO for so long I am really uncomfortable doing it anymore. It makes it hard for me to feel like I am contributing anything. Right now we are deciding on the schedule for next year. I don’t have any input because it doesn’t affect me at all. The Board needs people who are actually involved in racing.
The meetings aren’t so numerous and the duties aren’t hard. Especially when it’s about something you enjoy and participate in. So while I want NYRA to continue as a strong racing club, I believe it would do so better with someone who can offer more than just a warm body to fill the seat. I would like to have someone replace me on the Board so am appealing to all members to consider offering more to the organization than just participation.
Thank you, Joy Evans
Also – please! – give us your input on scheduling for next year, specifically on the Michelob Cup, by completing the short survey before the first ICRC scheduling meeting on Tuesday – link is found at:
Specific needs for volunteers include:
  • Web design and upkeep,
  • social media outreach,
  • promotion and marketing,
  • fundraising and development,
  • Race committee coordination, and
  • Social planning
